Every March 8 International Day of Working Women (also International Women’s Day), a date recognized by the United Nations Organization (UN) is held. On this day the struggle of women for their participation on an equal footing with men in society and in their full development as a person is commemorated. It is a national holiday in some countries.
The idea of an International Women’s Day came in the late nineteenth century during the industrial revolution and during the rise of the labor movement. The celebration includes a fight already begun in ancient Greece and reflected by Aristophanes in his play Lysistrata, which counts as Lysistrata initiated a sexual strike against men to end the war, and that was reflected in the French Revolution: Women Parisian, calling for liberty, equality and fraternity marched on Versailles to demand women’s suffrage.
Since 1975, International Year of Women, the International Women’s Day is celebrated on March 8 «to commemorate the historic struggle to improve the lives of women». It is celebrated around the world at local and national level.
